The Beatles
- as musicians and songwriters they have obviously been very important to me. There isn't a lot I can say that hasn't already been said about them.
Bruce Lee - to me Bruce Lee is more than just a movie star or martial artist. I can certainly appreciate him in both of those roles but it's the power behind that which impresses me. In the same way that Marley and Lennon used their music as a vehicle to spread peace, love and truth to the masses, Lee used his body instead. The dedication to push himself to the limit and beyond has rarely been seen. He demonstrated what anybody in any human field can do when they align themselves with a power greater than the person we see. In the same way musicians limit themselves by styles such as pop, country, and heavy metal, he broke down the the artificial barriers of fighting styles.
Neil Young - simply a one-off. The thing
I admire about him most is he's his own man and seems to do what he wants. His voice is oddly unique and the
range of his writing is impressive. After all this time he's one
of the few who've kept their integrity.
David Icke - all I knew of Icke up until late 2006 was the picture the media in this country had painted of him over the years as a cult leader, a crazy conspiracy theorist and madman. I came across one of his talks on the internet one day, and out of curiousity, sat and watched 6 hrs of him speaking and had my mind blown. Nothing he said sounded that crazy to me, it all seemed as if I'd known it all along, and that was what was so mind-blowing about it.
Lee Perry - through Bob Marley I developed a love for reggae music and started investigating other artists of that period. Lee 'Scratch' Perry was soon one who stood-out. The man is completely unique and "mad" but in a way which I've now come to understand is not actually that mad at all. He knows the same as what Bob knew and sings about truth, love and justice in his own abstract way. An inspiration to be yourself. |
